No Matter Lyrics

Born with a weak heart
Only for it to carry too much
Despite the scar tissue
Filled with love and luck
By your side, until the end
I loved you more than just a friend

Where I saw roses, you saw thorns
Where I saw right, you saw wrong
It’s why you saw me so torn
So torn

No matter how hard I breathe
I suffocate under you
No matter how deep I feel
I bottle it up for you
But when I needed you
You were no matter
I needed you
But you were no matter

No, not everything
Has a silver lining
Some people are stuck
Finding their feet
Others forever be pining
For the one they meet
Because love is as fleeting
As it is so deep

Where I saw roses, you saw thorns
Where I saw right, you saw wrong
It’s why you saw me so torn
So torn

No matter how hard I breathe
I suffocate under you
No matter how deep I feel
I bottle it up for you
But when I needed you
You were no matter
I needed you
But you were no matter

We went our separate ways
With empty cups and promises
You said yours was smaller
And came with conditions
The truth was, I was too much
And carrying was a mission
Ghosts were easier to love
Than the living

Where I saw roses, you saw thorns
Where I saw right, you saw wrong
It’s why you saw me so torn
So torn

No matter how hard I breathe
I suffocate under you
(Under you)
No matter how deep I feel
I bottle it up for you
(Bottle it up for you)
But when I needed you
You were no matter
(No matter)
I needed you
But you were no matter

Philip La Rosa released “No Matter” on Friday, 1st August 2025.

No Matter” by Philip La Rosa was produced by Nic Rollo.

No Matter” by Philip La Rosa was written by Philip La Rosa, Joshua Britiffe.

“No Matter” is the second release in a four-part song series from Fremantle artist Philip La Rosa and poet Joshua Britiffe, following the reflective debut Bittersweet.” Drawn from Britiffe’s forthcoming poetry collection Love and Other Death Sentences, the song explores the quiet devastation of loving someone who couldn’t meet you there — emotionally distant, conditionally present, and ultimately absent.

Produced in Perth by Nic Rollo, “No Matter” blends ambient alt-pop production with La Rosa’s vulnerable, soaring vocal to deliver a track that feels both intimate and cinematic. Lyrically, it captures the emotional imbalance in a one-sided relationship — where affection is withheld, feelings are bottled, and the weight of love becomes too heavy to carry alone. Lines like “when I needed you, you were no matter” speak to the heartbreak of realising your needs were never truly considered.

Building on the themes of emotional honesty and quiet grief introduced in “Bittersweet,” this second chapter deepens the narrative — revealing not just the pain of loss, but the longing for reciprocity. With two more songs to come, the series promises to chart the complex arc of love, heartbreak, and healing through La Rosa and Britiffe’s uniquely poetic lens.
